How To Increase Traffic To Your Website

Warren Knight Thursday, 20 December 2012.

It’s easy to build a website, but hard to build a successful website that is generating a significant amount of traffic. Here are our top 10 tips for increasing traffic to your website.

1. Forum’s and Discussions
Once you have worked out your target audience, you can then take your website to where they are most likely to hang out. If your target audience is purely women, then you can take part in discussions on chat rooms like Women’s Only Forums. Find your niche and take your website to them. Create your account, read what other users have written and jump into the conversations you feel you can add value. Don’t use forums to link drop, spam or troll as you will be reported.

2. Having a Blog and Shareable Content
If you don’t already have a blog, you must integrate it into your website. You can use WordPress which is a free and easy to use platform that allows you to integrate your keywords into any articles you post. Having a blog will help with your SEO and will most definitely drive more traffic to your website but always remember to only post content that is worth sharing. Don’t just focus on your blog content, your website content must also be fresh.

3. Social Media
The two words on everyone’s lips; Social Media. Having your Social networks like Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest and Google+ integrated on your website is a great way to drive traffic both ways. You should also use your Social Networks to promote your website.

4. Analytics
Having Google Analytics built into your website is a great way to keep track of traffic so that you know what is having the best impact. If you send out a post on Twitter with a link back to your website, you will be able to track this by integrating a new Google Social Media Dashboard to see where your website traffic is coming from.

5. Email Marketing
When thinking of ways to drive more traffic to your website, you should consider emailing all of your customers/sign ups fortnightly or monthly, updating them on offers and updates on your website. You will see an increase in traffic by doing this and possibly an increase in sales. Use an email marketing tool like MailChimp to create professional looking emails.

6. Images/Video’s on the Front Page of your Website
Regardless of whether you are selling products or services or even just promoting yourself, you should always have an image or video on the front page. This is a great way to keep viewers on your website to find out more about you. By uploading and hosting images (or using a third-party service like Flickr to embed your images with licensing requirements on that site), you create another traffic source for yourself via Image Search, and often massively improve the engagement and enjoyment of your visitors. If you would like to create your own Video’s use Animoto and if you would like to create your own bespoke images, use PicMonkey.

7. Host Events/Webinars
If you have a website that would benefit from either an event or Webinar then you should definitely use this to your advantage. If you are running an event, use EventBrite to create this event then embed the code into your website. This way, anyone that sees your event on EventBrite, will go to your website. Same applies for Webinars. Use an application called GoToWebinar to create it then share it with your community and see your traffic increase on your website.

8. SEO
An important part of your website is Search Engine Optimisation. You need to make sure you have embedded all of your keywords into your content on your website so that people searching your a website like yours, will be able to find you easily. This sounds easy but it’s a lot of hard work. Still, you can also strategically spread your content in different web pages while keeping your target niche in mind. Be very careful not to over link to pages within your site, this is a new penalty from Google‘s most recent update.

9. Run Competitions
Whether you run competitions on your website or inside of social media with WildFire, you have the opportunity to offer an audience something for free, in exchange for capturing their name and email address. This then gives you the power to add them into your email marketing and convert them into a constant visitor to your website.

10. Advertisement
The first thing you need to consider is how much money you have to spend on Advertising. If you have a budget, then you should consider PPC (pay per click) or advertisement in magazines or local newspapers. If you want to advertise your business for free then leave your business cards in clubs, libraries, community centers and non-profit websites. You can also advertise your business through word of mouth at networking events.

I hope these 10 tips for increasing traffic to your website help you increase sales and brand awareness - leave a comment below if you have other ideas to contribute!
