DEMO Africa team begin tour of tech startups
Their flagship event may not be until September, but DEMO Africa is already busy scouting, teaching and training startups in its tour of 16 African nations.
DEMO Africa is a LIONS@frica initiative that connects African tech startups to local and global economic ecosystems, and Event Director Mbugua Njihia says the tour will be, "targeting countries with an active technology startup ecosystem to encourage them and prepare them to submit quality applications." Among the countries included on the tour are Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Egypt, Cameroon and Nigeria.
Speaking at a session in Uganda, Mbugua was also keen to emphasise that attendees should focus more on value than profit: a view that chimes with the event's desire to ensure that Africa's big thinkers find innovative solutions to the continent's needs before linking up with VCs and corporate Goliaths to scale up their businesses.
Startups can apply for DEMO 2014 until the 15th of June 2014. All applicants will become part of the VC4Africa community, and gain access to mentorship and fundraising opportunities. 40 top businesses will then be selected by judges based on how well they link creativity, innovation, effectiveness and scalability, and be given the chance to launch their product into an ecosystem of VCs, investors, buyers and media.
