Start-up Profile: Maker Cloud, Berlin
Maker Cloud is an open, community-driven manufacturer directory, where makers, start-ups and inventors can get access to, share and ask for maker-proven manufacturers for plastic, metal, wood, fabric and electronic parts. Maker Cloud gives even the smallest town a platform to compile and share its manufacturing responsibilities and opportunities. Their mission is to simplify manufacturing and to empower passionate makers to disrupt the product paradigm of the old mass manufacturing mind set.
Maker Cloud was founded by entrepreneur Lutz Villalba-Adorno in 2013. Lutz was inspired by his family's manufacturing business. He wanted to create a platform that would bring trusted, local manufacturers to customers. Berlin has become a hive of startup activity over recent years with events such as Tech Open Air enabling and connecting entrepreneurs. Maker Cloud is in a prime European location ready to innovate, disrupt and change the status quo.
We are now in a period where information is public and people are willing to share their ideas, knowledge and opinions openly. The Maker Cloud community aims to capitalise on this sharing of information. The platform will ultimately give smaller, (perhaps overlooked) manufacturers the opportunity to thrive based on merit and skill alone, rather than being dominated by large corporate names. Traditionally supplier recommendations are shared between corporations, but Maker Cloud aims to simplify the choice through more information and transparency. They urge you to find out what manufacturing opportunities there are in your city or town, and which ones you would recommend. Maker Cloud are hoping to jumpstart a community of likeminded people, sharing information and supporting local.
