When the movable type printing press was brought to Western Europe in the 15th Century, you can imagine that the monks were a little put out. For centuries, manuscripts were hand stretched, illuminated and bound by a small group of devout men. The written word was there to praise the glory of God, books were expensive to produce and were only owned by an elite few. For the rest, well, they told stories in the ancient oral tradition. But print was different - it could reach the unwashed masses. With one fell swoop, the monks were out of business and we all started to read, rather than listen.
